Engineering Manager

Overview

We're looking for a Engineering Manager. Headquartered in Los Angeles, California, Right Balance provides top-tier technology talent for innovative companies in the US. We’re in the top 50 companies to watch in LA.

Engagement Details

What We Do

We're the first and largest peer-to-peer marketplace for laundry. Our customers tap the app and outsource their laundry. For them, it’s life without laundry, because we hacked it out of existence. But we solve a second problem too, which is that more and more people of varying backgrounds want to work from home. Luckily most people have an underutilized washer/dryer, which when combined with our Laundry Pro app, provides the first-ever manual labor work-from-home gig in the world. For all our users, we're a marketplace for a better life.

Our Progress

Perfect product market fit drove a 100x surge in users & revenue and double-digit MoM growth over the past few years. In 2021 we scaled to 500+ markets throughout the United States. In March 2022 we closed a $10m seed round which included VC investments from Headline, Origin Ventures, Starting Line VC, Ludlow Ventures, and Clean Ventures, as well as notable angel investments from Max Mullen, co-founder of Instacart, Steven Galanis, Co-founder and CEO of Cameo, Joanna Riley, CEO and co-founder of Censia, and Rob Chesnut, Chief Ethics Officer for airbnb. Significant growth continued in 2022 and 2023.

The Role

You won’t just manage engineers—you’ll orchestrate the entire tech symphony that propels our client growth. As our Engineering Manager, you’ll be the maestro of innovation, uniting a global team around big product visions and delivering features that delight our customers. From sprint planning to cultivating a high-performance culture, your leadership will ensure that our client scales at lightning speed.

While this role does not require hands-on coding, a strong technical background is essential to effectively guide engineers, make informed architectural decisions, and ensure technical excellence.

What You’ll Do

  • Command the Troops. Work with our globally distributed engineering squads, bridging time zones like a pro to deliver top-tier product features on time.
  • Drive the Roadmap. Translate ambitious goals into tangible sprint plans, ensuring everything from planning to release happens like clockwork.
  • Guard the Gates. Set the gold standard for code quality, security, and performance. Implement monitoring and incident response so issues get squashed before our users even notice.
  • Spark Innovation. Keep your radar on for emerging tools and best practices, foster continuous learning, and create a safe space for bold ideas and rapid experimentation.
  • Align with Stakeholders. Keep leadership informed, manage resources like a wizard, and ensure engineering efforts always sync up with our client overarching vision.

Here’s How You’ll Leave Your Mark

  • You’ll attract, nurture, and retain top-notch engineering talent, shaping our client's future superstar teams.
  • Prepare tickets, ensuring they are clear, complete, and stable (ready the week before the sprint begins)—with no need for changes and minimal need for clarification once the sprint begins.
  • You’ll maintain robust, scalable operations—staying two steps ahead of any hiccup and ensuring everything runs smoother than freshly ironed laundry.
  • You’ll foster an environment where new ideas are tested early and often, letting us stay ahead of the curve and at the cutting edge of on-demand services.
  • You’ll build bridges between product, design, and other teams, creating a unified force that drives our client forward.

Tech Stack

Our tech stack is mostly TypeScript, allowing engineers to implement end-to-end functionality. On the frontend we use Angular/Ionic and on the backend Firebase.

  2. Learn from the best people around you. We constantly challenge the status quo and invent new ways of building a great product.
  3. Flexible hours. Join daily standups, sprint planning, and retrospective meetings. Other than that you’re in control of your own schedule.
  4. 100% remote. Work anywhere, whether it is remotely in the comfort of your home, in a shared co-working space, in an RV on the beach, or while being a nomad in another country.
  5. Work on challenging problems, innovate, and positively impact many people's lives while having fun doing it.

Required Qualifications

  • You juggle multiple priorities in fast-paced, async environments without breaking a sweat—and you never lose sight of the bigger picture.
  • You’re self-directed, thrive in ambiguity, and treat “no” as the start of “how.” You’re all about innovation and pushing boundaries.
